Managed Detection & response

Cube Cyber's MDR service detects and actively responds to threats in your environment, 24/7 triage from our Australian hybrid SOC, detection engineering mapped to MITRE ATT&CK, and containment actions taken when threats are found, isolating hosts, disabling accounts, blocking activity, under authority agreed with you in advance. Detection without response is a newsletter; MDR is the difference between being told about an intrusion and having it stopped.

KEY CHALLENGES

MDR conversations start where monitoring alone stops being enough:

1

alerts that arrive after the damange

Alerts that arrive after the damage, a monitoring arrangement that emails findings for someone else to action means response speed depends on whoever reads the inbox, and ransomware operators move from foothold to impact in hours, not business days.

2

Response authority nobody defined

Response authority nobody defined, when something is found at 3am, can anyone isolate the host, disable the account, block the traffic, or does containment wait for a meeting, most organisations discover the answer during their first real incident.

3

Capability that cannot be hired

Capability that cannot be hired, detection engineering, threat hunting and response are specialist skills in permanent shortage, and a single internal hire cannot cover 168 hours a week, let alone the depth an incident demands.

WHEN TO ENGAGE

MDR is the right step when the cost of delay is intolerable, environments carrying ransomware-attractive assets, regulated data or operational systems, and when the organisation wants threats contained, not just reported. Natural entry points: after an incident where detection worked but response lagged, when an insurer or regulator asks about response capability rather than just monitoring, and when internal teams are drowning in alerts that deserve action, not acknowledgment. Existing EDR and SIEM investments carry straight in, MDR operationalises them.

CORE CAPABILITIES

Core capabilities & deliverables

Detection engineering

Detection engineering

Custom detection content built for your environment and threat profile, mapped to MITRE ATT&CK and tuned continuously, the difference between generic alerts and detections that recognise your normal and flag your abnormal.

24/7 triage and investigation

24/7 triage and investigation

Every detection assessed and investigated around the clock by Australian analysts with your context, scope established, is this one host or five, one account or an identity compromise, before response is calibrated.

Active response

Active response

Containment actions taken under pre-agreed authority: isolating endpoints, disabling accounts, terminating sessions, blocking indicators, executed in minutes when minutes matter, with every action logged and reported.

Threat hunting

Threat hunting

Proactive hunts through your telemetry for the tradecraft that evades detection rules, hypothesis-driven, ATT&CK-guided, and productive both in findings and in the new detections each hunt leaves behind.

Response playbooks

Response playbooks

Response actions, authority boundaries and escalation paths defined with you at onboarding, per scenario, so decisions at 2am were made at 2pm, and the actions taken are the ones you authorised.

Incident escalation

Incident escalation

Seamless escalation into Cube Cyber's incident response practice when an event exceeds MDR scope, same firm, same context, no cold handover, with forensics and recovery engaging as one continuous response.

METHODOLOGY AND FRAMEWORKS

MDR follows the managed practice operating model, with response depth added:

1

Onboard

Telemetry connection, response authority definition and playbook agreement, the authority conversation is the one that makes MDR real.

2

Tune

Detection engineering against your environment, with response actions rehearsed, not just documented.

3

Operate

24/7 detection, triage, investigation and response, with threat hunting on a scheduled cadence.

4

Improve

Every incident and hunt feeds detection content and playbook refinement, response that compounds.

The service is mapped to MITRE ATT&CK, supports Essential Eight, ISO 27001, APRA and SOCI expectations for detection and response capability, and runs under our ISO 27001 certified management system with client data kept onshore in Australia. We operate across the endpoint and SIEM platforms our clients run, including our Microsoft, SentinelOne, Fortinet, Cisco and Cribl partnerships.

FAQS

Frequently asked questions

Monitoring detects and escalates; MDR detects and acts. With monitoring, containment is your team's job once we call; with MDR, we take pre-authorised containment actions ourselves, isolating hosts, disabling accounts, in minutes, around the clock. Many clients run monitoring first and step up to MDR as the authority conversation matures.

Exactly the ones you pre-authorise, no more. Onboarding defines authority per scenario: isolate an endpoint showing ransomware behaviour, yes; disable an executive account on suspicion, perhaps only with a call. The boundaries are yours to set, documented in playbooks, and every action is logged and reported. Nothing about MDR removes your control; it removes the delay.

No, we operationalise them. MDR runs on the platforms you already own wherever they are capable, our partnerships span the mainstream enterprise stack, and we are direct if a platform genuinely cannot support the service. The frequent discovery is not that tools need replacing, but that they were never fully deployed or configured, which we fix as part of onboarding.

Hunting is proactively searching your telemetry for attacker tradecraft that rule-based detection missed, hypothesis-driven, guided by MITRE ATT&CK and current threat intelligence. It matters because sophisticated intrusions are built to evade known detections; hunts find the quiet ones, and every hunt hardens the detection content for next time.

MDR contains and stabilises, then escalates into our incident response practice for forensics, eradication and recovery, one firm, one context, one continuous response. Your playbook defines the escalation triggers, and because the responders and the MDR analysts share systems and history, the incident starts from knowledge, not discovery.

Yes, with OT-appropriate boundaries. Detection and monitoring extend across OT networks via passive methods and our Industrial Defender partnership; response actions in OT respect availability absolutely, containment favours network-level and boundary controls over anything that touches a running process, designed with the engineers who own the environment.
